Belleek village, winner of the Northern Ireland Calor Village of the Year® 2008 Award, went head to head with villages from across England, Scotland and Wales, yesterday in the UK Calor Village of the Year® 2008 Award.
Representatives from the village including Joanne Cunningham and Marie O'Shea from Belleek and Community partnership travelled to London for a glittering ceremony.
In the heels of the hunt, Islanders on the Isle of Barra scooped the title, having impressed judges with its variety of community activities, how it works to protect and enhance its environment and efforts to include people of all ages in activities. The islanders also demonstrated how they are striving towards ensuring Barra's sustainability by growing their own vegetables for local consumption and installing a community owned 900kW wind turbine.
Safe with the Northern Ireland title still firmly under its belt Belleek, continues to go from strength to strength, as a community having already wowed the judges when they visited with its information, resources, stories and guided tours of the facilities and activities including crèche facilities, mother and toddler groups, young at heart clubs, music clubs, organic gardening groups, and yoga for babies.
